Introduction to
Statewide Credentials
Gateways to Opportunity offers a variety of
credentials that can be awarded to individuals who achieve specific educational
or training milestones in early care and education.
A credential is a document validating an individual’s qualifications and is
issued based on a variety of achievements in field experience, knowledge and
skills, educational attainments and/or training accomplishments.
Who are credentials for?
Anyone who works in the early care and education field and who meets eligibility
requirements.
Q: How
do I get a credential?
A: By completing trainings and coursework/ programs of study
offered by training programs approved by Gateways to Opportunity and accredited
community colleges and universities.
Q: What credentials are offered in Illinois?
A: Currently, there are a few credentials being offered in
Illinois, such as the Illinois Director Credential
and the Level 1 Credential, which are tied to
Gateways to Opportunity . The Infant/Toddler Credential and
the Core Credential will be available in
2008. A statewide credential for school-age and youth professionals, the
Illinois School-Age and Youth (I-SAY) Credential, is currently in
development. Other statewide credentials
that can be earned include an Early Intervention Credential, the Type 04
teaching certificate and the nationwide Child Development Associate.
